The Prayer of Saint Francis

September 13, 2007

I read this on another blog run by my friend Jeremy. I found it encouraging and challenging:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

  1. Ok that is bizarre. I have that prayer hanging up in my office at the school. In fact I had the opportunity to be a guest speaker in a grad class (can anyone say weird?) and I finished my presentation by reading that prayer. That is easily one of the more challenging prayers to pray-for sure.

  2. Very cool! Yea, this prayer is pretty layered and deep.
